SUMMARY:Gaëlle Solal
DESCRIPTION:Born into a music-loving family\, Gaëlle Solal discovered the classical guitar at the age of five and began studying at the Marseille Conservatoire the following year. At just sixteen she took up a place at the Paris Conservatoire. As a little girl she’d written in a notebook\, «When I grow up\, I want to be a dancer and musician» – so some dreams do indeed come true… \nThree years later she graduated from the Conservatoire\, taking away with her a «Premier Prix» (honours degree) and a renewed desire to keep learning. Fun-loving\, ambitious and keen not to let any new challenge pass her by\, she took part in international competitions while studying for her master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. In 1998\, she became the first female French musician to win one of the world’s leading classical guitar competitions – the City of Alessandria Competition. As well as being awarded grants and bursaries by numerous foundations\, she also won twelve prizes in other national and international competitions. \nIn the early 2000s\, Solal moved to Andalusia and began a seven-year teaching career\, obtaining professorships at the Conservatories of Córdoba and Seville. During this period she continued her own studies\, attending masterclasses around the world. In 2006\, after ten years as half of the Astor Duo\, she resumed her solo performing career – soon after this she won second prize in the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Competition and went on to perform at prestigious venues in more than forty different countries\, as recitalist\, chamber musician and orchestral soloist. \nIn 2009\, an unexpected getaway to Brazil took her career in a new direction. Upon her return\, she renounced teaching to fully dedicate herself to her endless love for the stage. More attached to freedom than to dogma\, she seamlessly transitioned from a solemn solo in a long dress to the clownish duo Crazy Nails!\, from Bach to the Beatles\, from contemporary music to baroque music. \nA committed and supportive professional\, she campaigns for the presence and visibility of women in the guitar world via the Guitar’Elles\, which she is the founder of. She has been living in Brussels since 2011. \nMasterclass with Gaëlle\nJoin a masterclass with Gaëlle the morning of Sunday March 1 at the Rivers School Conservatory as part of their Guitar Weekend event. Learn more and get tickets. \nHave Dinner with Gaëlle\nWe invite you to join us to celebrate together with Gaëlle Solal and help fund BCGS events in the process. This will be an intimate dinner on March 1 and limited to just 20 people\, so reserve your spot now.

SUMMARY:Olson/De Cari Duo
DESCRIPTION:The Olson/De Cari Duo\, a husband-and-wife ensemble\, is dedicated to expanding the repertoire for classical guitar and voice. Their innovative repertoire includes many pieces written for them\, including compositions from their Science/Music Commissioning Project\, which seeks to celebrate the science-informed worldview and illuminate the human side of science through song\, with the most recent commission being Archimedes by Andrew York. “The Olson/De Cari Duo straddle science and art gloriously” (Science Friday). Their latest album\, Eve’s Diary\, features new compositions and arrangements commissioned by the Duo\, including a song cycle by David Leisner\, arrangements of Jobim songs by João Luiz\, and arrangements of theatre songs by Clarice Assad\, together with a science-themed commission by the late Frank Wallace on texts by Nobel Laureate scientist and poet Roald Hoffmann. Sparked by the challenges to live performance posed by the pandemic\, the Duo has recently forged new paths in classical music videography\, creating an inventive music video series in narrative style. For more information\, visit olsondecariduo.com. \nThe Duo’s unique approach draws on the hybrid nature of Gioia and John’s backgrounds and expertise. Gioia De Cari is an award-winning writer\, actor and singer and a proud member of SAG-AFTRA\, Actors’ Equity\, and the Dramatists Guild of America. She holds a Master of Science degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gioia’s criticallyacclaimed play Truth Values\, on themes of belonging for women in the male-dominated world of mathematics and science\, has been presented at more than 50 venues across the United States\, including the La Jolla Playhouse\, the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts\, and Ensemble Studio Theatre. For more information\, visit gioiadecari.com. \nJohn Olson performs with a variety of New York–based ensembles\, including the Olson/De Cari Duo and the Brooklyn Guitar Quartet. He has served since 2007 as President of the New York City Classical Guitar Society\, and has revitalized the organization and made it a thriving and central part of the city’s guitar community. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has performed scientific research for over two decades in academic and industrial settings. The practice of performing on the classical guitar is intrinsically linked to the practice of ‘musical translation’. Whether we take inspiration from string bowing\, vocal phrasing or orchestral colours in our own interpretations\, or endeavour in the actual transcription of music for other instruments we’d love to hear and play on the guitar\, we are continuously approaching music in a creative and open way. \nIn a one hour interactive lecture\, Maarten will introduce the basic ingredients for making your own arrangements on the classical guitar. Through examples of great arrangements by the likes of Mertz\, Tarréga\, Llobet but also Dušan Bogdanović and Sergio Assad\, we will dig for inspiration for our own work. \n\n11:00 am\nPhysical Acting\nInstructor: Matthew Bretschneider \nWant to add further depth\, freedom\, and expression to your guitar playing? The first CD of the trio\, Mangabeira was released in the fall of 2015 featuring world premiere recordings of works written specially for the trio by Assad\, Hand and Brouwer. João’s most recent solo album\, Central Guitar\, features twentieth century guitar works by Brazilian composers such as Gnattali\, Guarnieri\, and Gismonti. For his solo debut for Zoho records\, João released in 2022 From Spain to São Paulo with Spanish guitar works by Sor\, Torroba\, Mompou\, and Segovia. \nJoão holds a masters degree from Mannes College\, and as the recipient of the Augustine Foundation scholarship he earned his doctoral degree from Manhattan School of Music. Eager to expand the repertoire of his instrument João has commissioned and premiered works written for him by Sérgio Assad (24 studies)\, Leo Brouwer (Sonata n.7 & n.10)\, Clarice Assad\, David Leisner\, Ronaldo Miranda\, Mariel Mayz\, Sebastian Zubieta\, Marco Pereira\, David Sampson\, Frederic Hand and Dusan Bogdanovic.
