DESCRIPTION:Céili Connors is a Boston based performer\, teacher\, and artistic administrator who is actively performing both as a soloist and chamber musician. She has established a growing studio in Massachusetts\, and Rhode Island\, as well as holding faculty positions at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Community College of Rhode island. \nCeili received her Masters degree in classical guitar performance at the New England Conservatory of music in Boston under the instruction of Eliot Fisk. She completed her under graduate studies at the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Music in classical guitar performance. She also spent some time studying and living in Granada\, Spain\, where she attended the University of Granada\, and studied flamenco and Spanish guitar. She has appeared on stages all across New England such as Jordan Hall\, as well as internationally in numerous cities including London\, Granada\, Salzburg\, and been involved in a number of festivals across New England.

DESCRIPTION:Augustine Foundation Concert \n“Precision\, musical intelligence and passion” are words that have been used to described guitarist Colin Davin.  He has been hailed as “the real thing;  a player with a virtuoso’s technique\, a deeply expressive musicianship\, and a probing imagination” (American Record Guide). \nFor the past seven years Colin has served on the conservatory faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music as Co-Head of the Guitar Department alongside Jason Vieaux. He holds a Master of Music from The Juilliard School\, where he studied with Sharon Isbin; a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California with William Kanengiser (of the LA Guitar Quartet)\,  and underwent preparatory studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Jason Vieaux.  He has recently joined the faculty of Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester\, Virginia\, as Director of Guitar Studio and Associate Professor of Guitar. \nColin performs regularly as a soloist and as a guest artist with orchestras around the world.  He collaborates with  GRAMMY Award winning soprano Estele Gomez and Dallas Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Emily Levin.  He is recently back from performing in Australia and in October will play the guitar part in Mahler’s 7th Symphony with the Cleveland Orchestra in Cleveland\, Vienna\, and Israel.

DESCRIPTION:The Transcontinental Duo\, formed in 2000 by Igor Golger and Hiroko Kajimoto\, performs in various styles\, from baroque and classical to funk rock\, even though both were students in a classical conservatory setting. They play music from official sources\, as well as transcribing music from old phonograph recordings. \nHiroko Kajimoto graduated from the Osaka College of Music\, and the Boston Conservatory. Her main instrument is flute\, and she also plays many other woodwind instruments\, and guitar. \nIgor Golger graduated from the Boston Conservatory in guitar performance\, and also studied the Russian 7-string guitar\, an instrument that has been kept alive in Russia by gypsies and rare classical music enthusiasts.

DESCRIPTION:Jhon Alvarado\, guitar virtuoso\, re-energizes the classical guitar repertoire with captivating contemporary performances of world renowned 20th and 21st century composers. Jhon Alvarado’s performances are always unique and exciting\, with the inclusion of music by Toru Takemitsu\, George Gianopolous\, Dusan Bogdanovich\, and many other world-class contemporary composers. Jhon’s eclectic concert program’s continually take his audience members on trips around the world discovering music from different corners of the globe\, often beginning in Latin America and ending as far as Japan and the Middle East. In March of 2018\, Jhon Alvarado was awarded the prestigious President’s Honor Recital Award from the University of Redlands\, for displaying high levels of musicianship and performance on the concert stage. In 2021\, Jhon earned his M.M. from the New England Conservatory where he studied under Maestro Eliot Fisk and Jerome Mouffe. \nAlong with his performance experience\, Jhon Alvarado is a devout music educator. Inspired by his studies at the New England Conservatory\, Jhon believes that “Music in education plays an essential role in the early stages of a child’s development by fostering a growth mindset that rewards and praises students based on effort put forth rather than test score or innate ‘talent.’” Jhon is currently located in Boston\, MA and teaches guitar to students of all ages through his in-person and online private guitar studio.

DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the incomparable David Russell back to the BCGS stage to round out our 2022–23 Artist Series. \nGRAMMY award winner for his CD AIRE LATINO in the category of best instrumental soloist in classical music. \nHonorary Doctorate in Music by the University of Arizona in Tucson in 2014. \nInducted into the Hall of Fame of the Guitar Foundation of America in 2018. \nClassical guitarist David Russell is world renowned for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry\, having earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike. In recognition of his great talent and his international career\, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997. \nIn May 2003 he was bestowed the great honor of being made “adopted son” of Es Migjorn\, the town in Minorca where he grew up. Later the town named a street after him\, “Avinguda David Russell”. \nIn November 2003 he was given the Medal of Honor of the Conservatory of the Balearics. \nAfter winning the grammy award\, the town of Nigrán in Spain where he resides\, gave him the silver medal of the town in an emotional ceremony. \nDuring his studies at the Royal Academy\, David Russell won twice the Julian Bream Guitar Prize. Later he won numerous international competitions\, including the Andrés Segovia Competition \, the José Ramírez Competition and Spain’s prestigious Francisco Tárrega Competition . \nDavid Russell spends his time touring the world\, appearing regularly at prestigious halls in main cities\, such as New York\, London\, Tokyo\, Los Angeles\, Madrid\, Toronto or Rome. Concert-goers everywhere are in awe of his musical genius and inspired by his captivating stage presence. His love of his craft resonates through his flawless and seemingly effortless performance. The attention to detail and provocative lyrical phrasing suggest an innate understanding of what each individual composer was working to achieve\, bringing to each piece a sense of adventure. \nIn May 2005 he received a homage from the music conservatory of Vigo\, culminating with the opening of the new Auditorium\, to which they gave the name “Auditorio David Russell”. \nIn 2009 David was named honorary member of “Amigos de la Guitarra”\, the oldest guitar society in Spain. \nA prolific recording artists\, his collection includes seventeen CDs with Telarc International. \nThe New York Times wrote about his performance: “… Mr. Russell made his mastery evident without ever deviating from an approach that places musical values above mere display. It was apparent to the audience throughout the recital that Mr. Russell possesses a talent of extraordinary dimension”. \nUpon hearing play in London\, Andrés Segovia wrote: “My congratulations on your musicality and guitaristic technique”.

SUMMARY:Back Bay Guitar Trio
DESCRIPTION:Back Bay Guitar Trio formed in 2002 and has performed at Dartmouth College\, Longy School of Music\, Berklee College of Music\, St. Anselm College\, University of New Hampshire\, The House of Blues and at the world renowned Boston Hatch Shell. The BBGT have also been featured artists in concert series for the Boston Classical Guitar Society\, the New York City Classical Guitar Society\, and opened up for guitarist Al Dimeola at the Lebanon (NH) Opera House. The Back Bay Guitar Trio toured Germany in the summer of 2009 and appeared as featured artists at the Hildener Meisterkurs in Hilden and a concert sponsored by the U.S. Consulate at the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus in Frankfurt. \nAbout the Members\nJohn Mason grew up in Westwood Mass and currently resides in Northampton Mass. He studied at Middlebury College\, graduating in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in music. He furthered his music education at the Berklee College of Music the following year. In 2002\, he won the Guitarmageddon National Championship at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He is currently on faculty at Westfield State College\, Holyoke Community College and the Northfield Mount Hermon School. In addition to being in the Back Bay Guitar Trio\, John performs with the improv group Solo Mission with drummer Gary Rzab. \nDavid Newsam currently works as an assistant professor in the guitar department at Berklee where he has taught since 1989. He is also employed as a senior lecturer in music at Dartmouth College in Hanover\, NH where he teaches guitar and jazz improvisation. David created the jazz guitar program at the University of New Hampshire where he teaches\, directs the UNH Jazz Guitar Ensemble and coaches jazz ensembles. He is a former faculty member of the National Guitar Summer Workshop. David performs solo and group engagements throughout New England.\n \nJason Ennis is an exciting voice in the world of jazz guitar. His unique sound\, deep groove and sensitive feel\, along with a diverse background in jazz\, blues\, Brazilian music and classical music have made him highly in demand as a soloist\, sideman\, bandleader and musical director. A graduate of Middlebury College (BA in music)\, Jason attended Berklee College of Music (Boston) and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

SUMMARY:The Hampton Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Hampton Trio performs original music and arrangements for ensemble of mandolin\, mandola\, and classical guitar. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of groups such as Trio Nuovo (Japan) and Trio Chamorro (Spain)\, the Hampton Trio’s goal is to popularize and augment the existing repertoire for this instrumentation.  The Hampton Trio has performed at the 46 Festival Internacional de Plectro de La Rioja (2018) as well as The Sunday Sounds Series sponsored by the Boston Classiacal Guitar Society\, the Bread Box Theater\, the Packing House and other New England venues.

DESCRIPTION:Xuefei Yang is acclaimed as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. Hailed as a musical pioneer – her fascinating journey began after the Cultural Revolution\, a period where Western musical instruments and music were banned. Fei was the first-ever guitarist in China to enter a music school\, and became the first internationally recognised Chinese guitarist on the world stage. \nHer first public appearance was at the age of ten and received such acclaim that the Spanish Ambassador in China presented her with a concert guitar. Her debut in Madrid at the age of 14 was attended by the composer Joaquín Rodrigo and\, when John Williams heard her play\, he gave two of his own instruments to Beijing’s Central Conservatoire especially for her and other advanced students. \nFei is one of the few guitarists whose artistry connects with audiences far beyond the guitar fraternity. Her international success has led her to be invited to play in more than 50 countries at numerous prestigious venues\, and is frequently invited to play with the world’s leading orchestras\, and collaborate with artists such as Ian Bostridge\, Roberto Alagna and Sir James Galway. \nGramophone magazine praised her as one of the leading innovators of her generation for continuing to build the guitar repertoire. \nFei has made many acclaimed recordings for major labels. Her first received a gold disc and her second was selected as ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone magazine. Fei’s recent recordings include “Songs from our Ancestors” which continues her successful collaboration with Ian Bostridge and several solo albums; “Summertime”\, “Winter Songs” (Apple Music)\, “Sketches of China” (EMI) and “Magna Carta”\, the complete guitar works of John Brunning with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (Apple Music) which featured in the USA Billboard Charts and UK Official Charts. \nShe has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour\, the BBC Proms\, & documentaries on BBC and China Central Television. The UK classical music station\, Classic FM\, named Fei as one of the 100 top classical musicians of our time and BBC Music Magazine named her as one of the top six guitarists of the last century. \nWhile in Boston for this concert\, Xuefei will also be giving a master class on March 12 at the Rivers School Conservatory as part of their Guitar Weekend event.

DESCRIPTION:As guitar soloist and composer\, Dr. José Manuel Lezcano has captivated audiences on four continents. In programs of standard repertoire\, Hispano-American composers\, and original works\, he has appeared in major venues and festivals\, including Carnegie Recital Hall\, the NYC North-South Consonance Series\, Cuba\, Trinidad & Tobago\, Spain\, Ecuador\, Colombia\, Peru\, Brazil\, China\, Germany\, and the Czech Republic as recitalist and concerto soloist.   Dr. Lezcano is thrilled to recently join the School of Music at the University of Southern Maine (Gorham) as the new Artist Lecturer in Guitar.  He continues to serve as Professor Emeritus at Keene State College\, directing & coordinating the nationally acclaimed and NASM accredited guitar program there.  Described  by Fanfare Magazine as “an excellent guitarist as well as an imaginative composer\,” Jose has earned numerous professional recognitions\, including first prize in the MTNA National Guitar Competition\, the NHSCA Individual Artist Fellowship\, NHMTA Composer of the Year(twice)\, KSC Distinguished Research Award\, and a Fulbright Award to Ecuador\, where he pursued research on the guitar as ritual instrument in indigenous / mestizo summer solstice festivals\, and taught courses at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador.

SUMMARY:Back Bay Guitar Trio
DESCRIPTION:Back Bay Guitar Trio formed in 2002 and has performed at Dartmouth College\, Longy School of Music\, Berklee College of Music\, St. Anselm College\, University of New Hampshire\, The House of Blues and at the world renowned Boston Hatch Shell. The BBGT have also been featured artists in concert series for the Boston Classical Guitar Society\, the New York City Classical Guitar Society\, and opened up for guitarist Al Dimeola at the Lebanon (NH) Opera House. The Back Bay Guitar Trio toured Germany in the summer of 2009 and appeared as featured artists at the Hildener Meisterkurs in Hilden and a concert sponsored by the U.S. Consulate at the Nebbiensches Gartenhaus in Frankfurt. \nAbout the Members\nJohn Mason grew up in Westwood Mass and currently resides in Northampton Mass. He studied at Middlebury College\, graduating in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in music. He furthered his music education at the Berklee College of Music the following year. In 2002\, he won the Guitarmageddon National Championship at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He is currently on faculty at Westfield State College\, Holyoke Community College and the Northfield Mount Hermon School. In addition to being in the Back Bay Guitar Trio\, John performs with the improv group Solo Mission with drummer Gary Rzab. \nDavid Newsam currently works as an assistant professor in the guitar department at Berklee where he has taught since 1989. He is also employed as a senior lecturer in music at Dartmouth College in Hanover\, NH where he teaches guitar and jazz improvisation. David created the jazz guitar program at the University of New Hampshire where he teaches\, directs the UNH Jazz Guitar Ensemble and coaches jazz ensembles. He is a former faculty member of the National Guitar Summer Workshop. David performs solo and group engagements throughout New England.\n \nJason Ennis is an exciting voice in the world of jazz guitar. His unique sound\, deep groove and sensitive feel\, along with a diverse background in jazz\, blues\, Brazilian music and classical music have made him highly in demand as a soloist\, sideman\, bandleader and musical director. A graduate of Middlebury College (BA in music)\, Jason attended Berklee College of Music (Boston) and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Boston Classical Guitar Society for a special performance at the Hingham Public Library by guitar and flute duo\, Michael Bester and Amanda Roeder. \nAmanda Roeder is a multi instrumentalist and music educator\, adjudicator\, and performer. Since 2014 she has directed the choral ensembles and an award winning a cappella program at Chelmsford High School in Chelmsford\, MA. She is an experienced musical theater director and pit orchestra musician for scholastic and community productions throughout northeastern Massachusetts. A passionate educator and community builder\, she has served on the boards of numerous organizations that promote quality music education\, including the Massachusetts Music Educators Association\, the Contemporary A Cappella Society\, and the NE Voices festival. She holds degrees in music education from the University of Massachusetts and Gordon College. \nMichael Bester is an acoustic and electric guitarist\, bassist\, arranger\, producer\, and composer. He is versed in numerous styles\, from classical and jazz to rock and pop and beyond. In recent years\, he has performed in the Bester Papineau guitar duo\, as well as in pit orchestras for theatrical productions in the greater Boston area. He holds a degree in music performance from the University of Miami.

SUMMARY:Thatcher Harrison
DESCRIPTION:Thatcher Harrison is a guitarist and a composer. As a guitarist\, he plays everything from classical guitar to jazz guitar\, to fingerstyle guitar\, to popular/rock guitar. As a composer\, he deftly combines influences from many genres of music to create pieces that satisfy both the heart and the mind. \nAs a competitor\, Thatcher Harrison has won 20 prizes in regional\, national\, and international competitions\, most notably 1st Prize at the 2021 Twents Gitaarfestival International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, 1st Prize at the 2021 Pleven Guitar Festival Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, 1st Prize at the 2020 Boston Guitarfest Competition\, 1st Prize at the 2020 Atlanta Festival Guitar Competition\, and a winner of the 2019 National YoungArts Foundation Competition. \nAs a composer\, Thatcher Harrison specializes in what he calls “classical fusion” composition: pieces based in classical composition and performance techniques\, but with influences from jazz music\, rock music\, fingerstyle guitar music\, film score music\, and world music. While Thatcher is best known for his compositions for solo guitar\, he also loves to compose for different instruments and ensembles\, and he has completed several commissions for soloists and ensembles alike. \nAs a performer\, Thatcher Harrison chooses to perform unconventional and daring programs\, oftentimes consisting primarily of his own compositions. Fresh off his concert at the 2021 Boston Guitarfest\, Thatcher’s upcoming concert season will see him expand into the international scene\, as he will perform concerts for the Pleven Guitar Festival in Bulgaria\, the Twents Gitaarfestival in the Netherlands\, and the Domaine Forget International Music Festival in Canada. In years past\, Thatcher has performed at such notable concert halls as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, Jordan Hall\, Symphony Hall\, the Baryshnikov Arts Center\, and RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Thatcher also performed on Episode #376 of NPR’s From The Top in 2019. \nThatcher is currently studying for his Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at New England Conservatory with Eliot Fisk and Jérôme Mouffe\, and he also studies privately with flamenco virtuoso Grisha Goryachev and classical guitar virtuoso Scott Borg. Prior to attending NEC\, Thatcher studied with William Riley.

SUMMARY:Adam Del Monte
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to welcome Adam Del Monte to the BCGS stage to kick off the 2022–23 Artist Series. \nOne of the leading flamenco and classical guitarist/composers of his generation\, Adam del Monte has made it his life mission to fully express himself in these two genres\, transcending labeling and convention. Always having incorporated a wide array of musical styles in his compositions\, Del Monte and has embarked on a journey creating a unique sound and language of flamenco that is both steeped in tradition and progressive in its openness to musical flavors from around the world. \nDel Monte has recorded for Deutsche Gramophone – the featured flamenco guitar part in the double Grammy award winning opera Ainadamar by Osvaldo Golijov (2006)\, with soprano Dawn Upshaw and the Atlanta Symphony\, conducted by Robert Spano.  Since then\, he has toured this opera in\, Carnegie Hall\, NY\, Lincoln Center\, NY\, Barbican Center\, London\, Colorado Music Festival in Boulder\, Chicago Symphony and many more.  \nDel Monte was both influenced by and inspired the younger generation of flamenco performers who were beginning to depart from the previous virtual space of Spanish flamenco. Del Monte\, too\, set out in new directions\, integrating years of traditional and leading–edge flamenco training as well as expanding his musicianship on the classical guitar. An eclectic awareness of jazz\, world music and other contemporary forms led to new\, creative renditions of flamenco repertoire.   \nFirst Prize Winner at the 1997 Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition\, Del Monte is one of the new generation’s dynamic forces in both flamenco and classical guitar. He studied flamenco and classical guitar in Spain\, Israel & England. Beginning with his father\, he continued his training with such famed Gypsy performers as Pepe Habichuel”\, Paco Cortez\, Nino Miguel &Gerardo Nunez. His classical guitar teachers were Menashe Baquiche\, Israel and Gordon Crosskey at Chethams School of Music and at the Royal Northern College of Music\, Manchester\, England. He has also appeared as both a solo artist and group performer in major venues such as LA’s Mark Taper Forum and the Wilshire Theater; the Teatro Real and the Conde Duque in Madrid; Manuel de Falla Auditorium in Granada; New Mexico St Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe; the International Guitar Festival in Israel\, GFA in St Louis\,’96\, La Jolla\,’97 and Charleston\, 99 GFA\, Guitar Festival\, the 500th anniversary of Columbus celebrations in Paris and Madrid. \nAdam has been on the studio guitar department faculty at USC since 2000\, where he teaches flamenco and classical guitar.  \nDel Monte plays classical and flamenco guitars by Erez Perelman from Israel and Altamira Guitars. \nwww.adamdelmonte.com \nFeaturing Ria Modak\nThe BCGS is also happy to welcome Ria Modak to the Artist Series stage this evening to open Adam Del Monte’s performance. \n \nRia Modak is a guitarist and composer from New York. She is pursuing a master’s degree in guitar performance at the New England Conservatory of Music\, where she studies with Eliot Fisk\, Jérôme Mouffe\, and Grisha Goryachev\, and recently graduated from Harvard College\, where she studied with Vijay Iyer and Esperanza Spalding. Her playing has been recognized by the National YoungArts Foundation\, the Long Island Classical Guitar Society\, the New York Guitar Seminar\, and Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society\, and she appeared on NPR’s From The Top in 2018 and 2020. She has performed with Paquito D’Rivera\, Ali Sethi\, Claire Chase\, Isheeta Chakrvarty and other musicians both in the United States and India at venues ranging from Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. As a composer\, she is inspired by her training in Hindustani music and flamenco\, and has been commissioned by the Harvard Office for the Arts\, the Harvard Composers’ Association\, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem\, and Winter JazzFest as part of Jen Shyu and Sara Serpa’s M3 Fellowship.

SUMMARY:Emma Moseley & Katie Graves
DESCRIPTION:Emma Moseley\n \nBorn in Baton Rouge\, Emma Dean quickly found herself growing up in small town\, Mississippi. It was here that she decided to pick up the guitar at the age of 6\, and has been willing her small hands to grow and reach ever since. Emma also found her voice at a young age\, singing and playing in a quaint\, wooden church that was filled with true southern tradition\, love\, and charm. Lucky for Emma\, there aren’t many distractions in small town\, MS to divert a kid’s attention from the music she sought. In fact\, MS was the perfect place to cultivate a serious guitarist and vocalist. Emma became inspired by the musical traditions of the delta (BB King\, Robert Johnson\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, Muddy Waters) and was fortunate to encounter one of southern Mississippi’s great blues players\, Jeromy Spiers\, who became Emma’s mentor and teacher throughout her young childhood. Spiers introduced Emma to the fingerstyle playing of the likes of Chet Atkins\, while at the same time Emma began to undertake classical guitar and voice study at age 9 with Hammond\, LA’s Patrick Kerber and Dr. David Bernard at SLU. Clearly\, Emma’s musical climate for guitar study was as rich as the southern soil she was rooted in- an ideal place for a music kid to grow and bloom. Emma has sought teachers of varied backgrounds and genres (John Konesky of Tenacious D fame\, fingerstyle genius Brooks Robertson\, John Knowles\, CGP\, Bobby Stanton\, and Guy Van Duser\, among others). The music of Tommy Emmanuel was a natural progression for Emma\, who has attended Emmanuel’s workshops and camps\, and considers performing with him an honor. Along the way\, Emma relocated to Austin\, TX\, in 2013\, where she met and has performed with the great Pete Huttlinger\, studied with Van Wilks\, and has been performing regularly in the rich Austin music scene. \nNow\, a junior at Berklee College of Music\, Emma won her full tuition scholarship as a finalist through Lee Ritenour’s Six String Theory competition.  She will graduate with a double major in Guitar Performance and Music Business Management.  In between her Boston studies\, Emma’s past few summers have been spent attending the Chet Atkins convention in Nashville with America’s greatest thumb pickers\, performing on Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour with Eric Johnson\, touring across America with several bands\, recording several projects\, studying at the Rocky Mountain Guitar Camp (on scholarship from Gretsch) and continuing to grow and develop as a young woman in the music world. \nKatie Graves\n \nKatie Graves is a fingerstyle guitarist from Columbus\, Ohio. She currently studies guitar performance at Berklee College of Music. In Spring of 2022\, Katie was awarded the Guitar Department’s top Spring Award\, the Jimi Hendrix Scholarship. Katie is the lead student session player in the Guitar/Screen Scoring cross-course collaboration\, and\, as part of this\, gives seminars each semester to the Berklee Film Scoring Department on writing for the classical and electric guitar. Katie also works for the Berklee Vocal Department as an accompanist. Outside of Berklee\, Katie works as a studio musician\, pit guitarist\, transcriber and editor of solo guitar arrangements for publication\, and a concert performer. She teaches private lessons\, and specializes in finger-style guitar technique including injury rehabilitation\, arranging\, and reading/writing for the classical guitar.

DESCRIPTION:Tedesco Duo is a lively flute and guitar duo from New England comprised of Arielle Burke on flute and Catherine O’Kelly on guitar. They perform repertoire from all eras\, with an emphasis on contemporary music. \nArielle and Catherine began performing together in 2011 as students at The Hartt School. SUMMARY:Providence Mandolin Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Providence Mandolin Orchestra was formed and directed by the famous Italian mandolinist Giuseppe Pettine in the 1930’s.  It was later directed by Hibbard Perry.  Mark Davis took over the reins as conductor/music director in 1989.  Since then the PMO has established a reputation as one of the premiere American mandolin orchestras with a reputation for programming original contemporary compositions by such composers as J. Kellaris\, F. Wallace\, C. Assad\, A. Carr-Boyd\, R. Charlton\, O. Hartford\, F. Trester\, B. Beath\, A. Kruisbrink\, and V. Kioulaphides.

DESCRIPTION:Thatcher Harrison is a guitarist and a composer. As a guitarist\, he plays everything from classical guitar to jazz guitar\, to fingerstyle guitar\, to popular/rock guitar. As a composer\, he deftly combines influences from many genres of music to create pieces that satisfy both the heart and the mind. \nAs a competitor\, Thatcher Harrison has won 20 prizes in regional\, national\, and international competitions\, most notably 1st Prize at the 2021 Twents Gitaarfestival International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, 1st Prize at the 2021 Pleven Guitar Festival Fingerstyle Guitar Competition\, 1st Prize at the 2020 Boston Guitarfest Competition\, 1st Prize at the 2020 Atlanta Festival Guitar Competition\, and a winner of the 2019 National YoungArts Foundation Competition. \nAs a composer\, Thatcher Harrison specializes in what he calls “classical fusion” composition: pieces based in classical composition and performance techniques\, but with influences from jazz music\, rock music\, fingerstyle guitar music\, film score music\, and world music. While Thatcher is best known for his compositions for solo guitar\, he also loves to compose for different instruments and ensembles\, and he has completed several commissions for soloists and ensembles alike. \nAs a performer\, Thatcher Harrison chooses to perform unconventional and daring programs\, oftentimes consisting primarily of his own compositions. Fresh off his concert at the 2021 Boston Guitarfest\, Thatcher’s upcoming concert season will see him expand into the international scene\, as he will perform concerts for the Pleven Guitar Festival in Bulgaria\, the Twents Gitaarfestival in the Netherlands\, and the Domaine Forget International Music Festival in Canada. In years past\, Thatcher has performed at such notable concert halls as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, Jordan Hall\, Symphony Hall\, the Baryshnikov Arts Center\, and RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Thatcher also performed on Episode #376 of NPR’s From The Top in 2019. \nThatcher is currently studying for his Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at New England Conservatory with Eliot Fisk and Jérôme Mouffe\, and he also studies privately with flamenco virtuoso Grisha Goryachev and classical guitar virtuoso Scott Borg. Prior to attending NEC\, Thatcher studied with William Riley.

SUMMARY:Kim Perlak
DESCRIPTION:Kim’s approach to the guitar includes new music\, education\, and public service. Her performances of classical works\, original pieces\, and collaborations with jazz and traditional players have been featured on National Public Radio\, at the Peabody Institute Fretfest\, and on five recordings. Her projects combining performance\, American music history\, and educational outreach have been funded through grants from the Center for African American Southern Music and Yale Alumni Ventures. \nAt Berklee College of Music\, Kim served as Assistant Chair of Guitar for five years before becoming Chair of Guitar in September 2018. As part of her curriculum development for the department\, she authored the book Classical Technique for the Modern Guitarist\, which was published by Berklee Press/Hal Leonard in 2016. She is the recipient of the 2016 and 2018 Berklee Chair Recording Grants. Kim is an advisor to the Berklee Career Center\, and is the director of Berklee Guitar Sessions.

Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Trio Nuovo (Japan) and Trio Chamorro (Spain)\, the Hampton Trio’s mission is to popularize and add to the existing repertoire for this instrumentation.  Recent performances by the Trio include the Classical Mandolin Society of America’s Virtual Summer Event\, the “Sunday Sounds Series” at the Hingham (MA) Public Library\, the 46 Festival Internacional de Plectro de La Rioja (Logroño\, Spain)\, and Music at Fishs’ Eddy (NY).  Beverly Davis (classical guitar) has been involved in plucked string ensembles since the 1980’s when she studied classical guitar with Reed Desrosier.  A long-time member and former president of the Providence Mandolin Orchestra\, Davis directed the 2001 International Festival of Mandolins in Providence\, Rhode Island.  She also tours and records in a duo with Mark Davis and with the New American Mandolin Ensemble.  Mark Davis (mandolin) began his guitar and mandolin studies with Hibbard Perry in Rhode Island and continued his musical training with the eminent German guitarist Siegfried Behrend.  Over his career Davis has performed widely in the United States and abroad and has made numerous recordings. He is the Music Director of the Providence Mandolin Orchestra and the New American Mandolin Ensemble.  Robert Margo (mandola in G) is an accomplished performer on plucked strings. Since 2014 she has directed the choral ensembles and an award winning a cappella program at Chelmsford High School in Chelmsford\, MA. She is an experienced musical theater director and pit orchestra musician for scholastic and community productions throughout northeastern Massachusetts. A passionate educator and community builder\, she has served on the boards of numerous organizations that promote quality music education\, including the Massachusetts Music Educators Association\, the Contemporary A Cappella Society\, and the NE Voices festival. She holds degrees in music education from the University of Massachusetts and Gordon College. \nMichael Bester is an acoustic and electric guitarist\, bassist\, arranger\, producer\, and composer. He is versed in numerous styles\, from classical and jazz to rock and pop and beyond. In recent years\, he has performed in the Bester Papineau guitar duo\, as well as in pit orchestras for theatrical productions in the greater Boston area. He holds a degree in music performance from the University of Miami.

He has given concerts and master classes for numerous universities\, performing arts centers\, church concert series\, guitar societies\, libraries\, and museums\, including Auditorio Juan Victoria in San Juan\, Argentina\, Salon Parroquial-Conciertos “El Rincon” in Villa-General Belgrano\, Argentina\, and the Ventura County\, Colorado Springs\, Sacramento\, Bloomington\, Jefferson\, Knoxville\, and Portland Guitar Societies. \nAs a recording artist\, his discography includes a total of 5 CD’s: His debut CD\, “Homage to Piazzolla\,” received critical acclaim from the American Record Guide and Classical Guitar Magazine. His second recording titled\,“Guitar Sudamericana\,” features compositions by José Luis Merlin\, Jorge Morel\, Eduardo Falú\, Antonio Lauro and Villa-Lobos. Most Recently “A Journey through Latin America\,” features compositions by Gentil Montaña\, Isaac Albéniz\, Francisco Tárrega\, and José Luis Merlin. As a supporter of chamber music with guitar\, Mr. Nigro collaborated to record 2 CD’s with flute and guitar; “Between Flute and Guitar” and “As in Dreams…Reflections for Flute and Guitar” which features the premiere recording of a new composition by José Luis Merlin titled\, Agua del Trapcihe. \nMichael holds a Master of Music degree in Guitar Performance from California State University\, Fullerton and a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance from Indiana University\, Bloomington. His principle teachers were David Grimes and Ernesto Bitetti. He is an active member of the guitar community; he is co-founder of the Long Beach Classical Guitar Society\, co-author of “The Essential Classical Guitar Scale Book\,” reviewer of new music publications for Soundboard\, and sought after teacher and performer.

DESCRIPTION:The Transcontinental Duo\, formed in 2000 by Igor Golger and Hiroko Kajimoto\, performs in various styles\, from baroque and classical to funk rock\, even though both were students in a classical conservatory setting. They play music from official sources\, as well as transcribing music from old phonograph recordings. \nHiroko Kajimoto graduated from the Osaka College of Music\, and the Boston Conservatory. Her main instrument is flute\, and she also plays many other woodwind instruments\, and guitar. \nIgor Golger graduated from the Boston Conservatory in guitar performance\, and also studied the Russian 7-string guitar\, an instrument that has been kept alive in Russia by gypsies and rare classical music enthusiasts.
