SUMMARY:Kevin Loh
DESCRIPTION:Kevin stands as a distinguished artist\, having achieved the esteemed Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music.  Originally from Singapore\, Kevin was the grand prize winner in 2023 the Boston GuitarFest and most notably\, he secured 2nd place at the 2023 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition\, arguably the most prestigious classical guitar competition in the world. \nWhen Kevin was just 12 years old\, he was talent-scouted by the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School through his YouTube channel. This recognition led to an extraordinary opportunity where he was awarded a grant from The Rolling Stones to pursue his musical studies at the illustrious institution as their first Asian guitarist. \nMost recently\, Kevin earned both his Master of Music & Performance Certificate in Guitar Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a Graduate Teaching Assistant\, studying under the guidance of world-renowned guitarist\, Cuban-born Prof. René Izquierdo. Building upon his exceptional educational experience there\, he has now transitioned into a faculty role as a Lecturer in the Classical Guitar Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \nThis concert was made possible with the assistance of an Augustine Foundation grant.

SUMMARY:Bin Hu
DESCRIPTION:Bin Hu was born in 1987 in Tianjin\, China. He began classical guitar lessons at age 11 with Zhiwei Li\, a pioneer and founder of the first classical guitar school in China. He then studied privately in Beijing with Jiajiong Li of the Central Conservatory of Music. His undergraduate studies were with Heiki Mätlik at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn. He then went to Salzburg to study with Marco Tamayo at the Universität Mozarteum where he obtained his Master of Arts degree with distinction. He is currently completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Arizona with Professor Tom Patterson. Within the framework of his studies Hu also took part in master classes taught by Sérgio and Odair Assad\, David Russell and Ricardo Gallén\, among others. \n  He appears on stage as a solo guitarist\, chamber musician\, and soloist with orchestra. He gave the world première of a guitar concerto composed by Jorge Rodriguez-Caballero.  As a scholar\, he has been invited to several musical institutes in China to present a variety of topics regarding Baroque performance practice. His scholarly activities and interpretations of Bach’s music culminated in winning the 2016 David Russell Bach Prize. David Russell\, judge of this competition\, remarked after hearing Hu’s interpretation of Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Minor\, BWV 1003\, “Bin’s performance was powerful and convincing\, among the best performances of this sonata I have heard.”

DESCRIPTION:Thatcher Harrison is a guitarist and a composer. As a guitarist\, he plays everything from classical guitar to jazz guitar\, to fingerstyle guitar and more. As a composer\, Thatcher Harrison specializes in what he calls “classical fusion” composition: pieces based in classical composition and performance techniques\, but with influences from jazz music\, rock music\, fingerstyle guitar music\, film score music\, and world music. You can hear influences from a wide range of music genres in his original compositions.    \nAs a competitor\, Thatcher Harrison has won 20 prizes in regional\, national\, and international competitions.  Thatcher is currently studying for his Masters degree at the Peck School of the Arts at the  University of Wisconisin – Milwaukee with René Izquierdo. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at New England Conservatory where he studied with Eliot Fisk and Jérôme Mouffe.

DESCRIPTION:Hao Yang is a concert classical guitarist and Astral Artist from China  who is actively engaged in solo and chamber music performances.  As a chamber music enthusiast\, Ms. Yang made her Carnegie Hall debut premiering guitar duo ‘Talking Guitars’ by renowned composer Paul Lansky with fellow guitarist JIJI.  \nYang  has won numerous guitar competitions including in 2021 Astral Artists’ National Audition.  She paced second at the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artist Competition in 2024 and  the Andres Segovia 7th International Guitar Competition. She holds a BM from the Curtis Institute of Music\, MM from Lamont School of Music\, and is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at the Yale School of Music. \nThis concert is made possible by an Augustine Foundation grant.

SUMMARY:Joel Spears
DESCRIPTION:Joel Spears is a self- taught string player. Inspired by the sound and the vast repertoire of the lute\, he began studying the instrument in all its various forms.  \nJoel is much sought after as a soloist\, continuo player\, lecturer and teacher. He is a founding member of the ensemble Black Tulip\, and has performed with Lyric Opera of Chicago (including on-stage appearances)\, Chicago Opera Theater\, the Chicago Bach Project\, and many more.  \nAs a lecturer and performer\, he has appeared at the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Madison Early Music Festival\, and as Guest Artist and Lecturer at Grand Valley State University.  Joel has been the Lute Instructor at the Music Institute of Chicago\, and founded The Early Music Series at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake\, Illinois. He is also the first theorbo and baroque guitar teacher in the nation at the high school level\, teaching at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire\, IL. Joel currently lives in Portsmouth\, NH.

He is a Music Minus One recording artist and an NEA grant recipient. \nDave Mclellan has collaborated with Neil Anderson (Anderson-McLellan Guitar Duo)\, Frank Wallace\, Edward Flower\, and many more. He is a former faculty member of The Hartt School and the University of Connecticut and founder of Concert In Your Living Room\, which provides fund-raising assistance to non-profit organizations. He is currently on the faculty of Performing Arts Center MetroWest and the Artist in Residence program in Harvard\, MA. Dave is the orchestral timpanist for Lincoln-Sudbury Civic Orchestra.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Blanchette is known around the world as the inventor of the 11-string archguitar. He is a guitarist\, composer\, arranger and conductor and  has released 17 albums of performance on the archguitar on the Dorian label and his own imprint\, Archguitar Music. His albums receive heavy radio airplay.   He performs and records in solo recital and together with Mané Lareggla (of Madrid\, Spain) as Archguitar Duo.  Blanchette is a veteran performer who has appeared on NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion\,” and at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, \nPeter is a recipient of the Massachusetts Council Artist Grant in Music Composition.  As a composer his music has been featured in films and television for over 20 years. Credits: HBO’s Sex and the City\, Cannes Palme D’Or nominated film Illuminata\, (directed by John Turturro)\, and commissions from the Dingle Film Festival and the Massachusetts International Festival of the Arts for new scores to three of Buster Keaton’s silent masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Catherine O’Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Classical guitarist Catherine O’Kelly is an active performer throughout New England\, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. She performs regularly as part of the concert series for The Shirley Meeting House in Shirley\, MA.  In June 2020 she founded and directed the Online Guitar Festival\, providing performance opportunities\, master classes\, composition classes\, and songwriting classes to guitarists of all ages and levels.  \nCatherine earned her Master’s degree in guitar performance from The Hartt School in CT where she studied with Richard Provost; and a BA in music and philosophy from Vassar College. She is currently finishing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in classical guitar performance at The Hartt School in West Hartford\, CT\, where she studies with Christopher Ladd.  She has performed in master classes for Jason Vieaux\, Odair Assad\, Sergio Assad\, Andrew York\, Vladimir Gorbach\, Antigoni Goni\, Oscar Ghiglia\, Eliot Fisk\, and Jorge Caballero. \nIn addition to her performing and academic studies\, Catherine teaches at The Rivers School Conservatory in Weston\, MA; Dana Hall School in Wellesley\, MA; Powers Music School in Belmont\, MA; and at The Community School of the Arts in Storrs\, CT\,  and is currently a board member of the Boston Classical Guitar Society.

Reservations recommended but not required; seating is on a first-come\, first-serve basis. \nMake your free reservation \n\nAugustine Foundation Concert \nBokyung Byun enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after guitarists of her generation. She holds the distinction of being the first female winner of the prestigious JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition\, where Falletta herself described Bokyung’s performance as “stunning\, showcasing her gorgeous tone\, immaculate technique\, and sophisticated musicianship.” \nShe was the 2021 grand prize winner at the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition and the Montreal International Classical Guitar Competition.  Bo is the recipient of the 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant \nBorn in Seoul\, Korea\, Bo began playing guitar at the age of six. At eleven\, she took the stage for her first solo recital\, leading to an early start in her teen years performing numerous concert tours around Korea. By her teen years she had gained national attention for first-prize finishes in three renowned Korean competitions.  She soon moved to New York City where she entered The Juilliard School at the age of sixteen. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. Teachers and mentors include Scott Tennant\, William Kanengiser\, and Sharon Isbin. \nIn 2020\, Bokyung co-founded Guitarlab which provides an innovative online learning platform offering cutting-edge classes designed for young professionals around the world.  She is currently on the guitar faculty of University of North Texas.

DESCRIPTION:With: Tere Luna\, Bolero and Rumba Flamenca singer \nPortsmouth’s Guitar Sunday Series proudly presents international Flamenco guitar master Val Ramos performing a recital of traditional and contemporary Flamenco guitar music\, with a cameo performance by Rumba Flamenca singer Tere Luna. \nVal Ramos is recognized internationally as one of the best Flamenco guitarists in the United States. He made his professional debut in 1985 on the Disney Channel’s  “Coming On!\,” a show that visited college campuses all across America to show off exceptionally talented students. He plays with his brother Jose Ramos and the Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble. He has played and toured throughout Europe and the US\,  released three CDs of original Flamenco guitar compositions\,and has been featured in a variety of guitar music samplers produced by the Connecticut Guitar Society. \nHe has been hailed as “a hidden treasure of Flamenco in the Americas. Superb musicianship” (Flamenco Connection) and “The best of classical Flamenco brought to modern standards” (Rootsworld.com).

SUMMARY:Colin Davin
DESCRIPTION:Augustine Foundation Concert \n“Precision\, musical intelligence and passion” are words that have been used to described guitarist Colin Davin.  He has been hailed as “the real thing;  a player with a virtuoso’s technique\, a deeply expressive musicianship\, and a probing imagination” (American Record Guide). \nFor the past seven years Colin has served on the conservatory faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music as Co-Head of the Guitar Department alongside Jason Vieaux. He holds a Master of Music from The Juilliard School\, where he studied with Sharon Isbin; a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California with William Kanengiser (of the LA Guitar Quartet)\,  and underwent preparatory studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Jason Vieaux.  He has recently joined the faculty of Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester\, Virginia\, as Director of Guitar Studio and Associate Professor of Guitar. \nColin performs regularly as a soloist and as a guest artist with orchestras around the world.  He collaborates with  GRAMMY Award winning soprano Estele Gomez and Dallas Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Emily Levin.  He is recently back from performing in Australia and in October will play the guitar part in Mahler’s 7th Symphony with the Cleveland Orchestra in Cleveland\, Vienna\, and Israel.

DESCRIPTION:The Hampton Trio is an ensemble of mandolin\, mandola\, and classical guitar (Robert Margo\, mandolo/mandolin\, Beverly Davis\, guitar\, and Mark Davis\, guitar/mandolin). Their program is varied and reflects their interest to popularize and add to the existing repertoire for this particular group of instruments. Their programs often include classical guitar duos by Mark and Beverly Davis and mandolin solos by Robert A. Margo. They are all members of the New American Mandolin Ensemble and have appeared in plucked string music festivals in throughout Europe and the USA.

DESCRIPTION:Praised by Classical Guitar Magazine as “confident and quite extraordinary.” Korean guitarist\, Bokyung Byun enjoys a rising reputation as one of the most sought-after guitarists of her generation. She is the first female winner of the prestigious JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition. Ms. Falletta herself described Bokyung’s performance as “stunning\, showcasing her gorgeous tone\, immaculate technique\, and sophisticated musicianship …” She has excelled on the competitive circuit\, winning first-prize finishes in numerous international guitar festivals and in 2016\, was named the recipient of the International Artist Fellowship awarded to outstanding artists by the University of Southern California. \nBorn in Seoul\, Korea\, Ms. Byun began playing guitar at the age of six and took the stage for her first solo recital at the age of eleven. Ms. Byun moved to New York City when she was 16 where she entered The Juilliard School. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Southern California.

DESCRIPTION:Music from South America for oboe and guitar. \nMargaret Herlehy is an active chamber musician and performer. She is a resident artist in music at UNH and performs with the UNH faculty trio Sospiri.   David Newsam\, guitar\, is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston but also completed his studies in the Modern American Music program at Longy School of Music. David currently works as an assistant professor in the guitar department at Berklee where he has taught since 1989. He is also employed as a senior lecturer in music at Dartmouth College in Hanover\, NH where he teaches guitar and jazz improvisation. David created the jazz guitar program at the University of New Hampshire where he teaches\, directs the UNH Jazz Guitar Ensemble and coaches jazz ensembles. Their recently released album\, Café 1930\, explores the oboe as a lead voice in the popular instrumental music of South America including Brazilian Choro\, Classical Tango and Samba.

SUMMARY:Adam Levin\, Classical Guitar
DESCRIPTION:Adam Levin is a native of Chicago’s North Shore. He holds bachelor’s degrees from Northwestern University in Music Performance\, Psychology\, and Pre-Med. He completed his master’s degree in guitar performance at New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Eliot Fisk. Levin is a professor of guitar at the University of Rhode Island and also teaches at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston. \nAdam is an avid chamber musician. He has performed with orchestras\, string quartet\, and various instrumental and vocal duo combinations.  His primary chamber ensemble\, Duo Sonidos\, which has expanded the repertoire for violin and guitar through new commissions. \nFrom 2008-2011\, Levin was honored as a Fulbright Scholar as well as grant awards from the Program for Cultural Cooperation Fellowship to research contemporary Spanish guitar repertoire. This three-year residency resulted in a major collaboration with 30 Spanish composers spanning four generations\, who each wrote works commissioned by and dedicated to Levin.  He has released four recordings on the Naxos label focusing on these new commissioned works of 21st Century Spanish Guitar\,
